На картине изображено сражение 3 ноября 1812 года. Показана колонна генерала П.Н. Чоглокова, вступившая на городские улицы и штыками выбивающая яростно защищающегося противника.
В левой части композиции момент наступления Перновского пехотного полка, который можно узнать по Георгиевским знаменам.
Рядом с Перновским полком изображен Чоглоков на коне. Он со шпагой в руке ведет в бой солдат. Рядом с ним - его адъютант.
В центре картины изображена рукопашная схватка солдат и офицеров Елецкого пехотного полка с французскими пехотинцами.
В правой части - сгрудились обозные и лазаретные повозки французов, создавшие затор, через который пробираются кавалеристы разных полков, спеша укрыться от русских пуль. Артиллеристы с трудом пытаются провезти зарядные ящики.
На площади, перед собором, части французской пехоты готовятся встретить штыками надвигающихся русских. Видна группа генералов и офицеров на конях, стремящихся организовать оборону.

В 1839 году по приглашению императора Николая I посетил Россию, получил заказ написать для Зимнего дворца цикл картин о важнейших сражениях 1812 года. Вместе со знатоком униформы генералом Л.И. Килем совершил поездку по местам сражений 1812 года, сделал множество зарисовок (хранятся в Мюнхене). Был свидетелем юбилейных торжеств 1839 г. на Бородинском поле.

The Battle of Vyazma

The Battle of Vyazma 3 November 1812 occurred at the beginning of Napoleon's retreat from Moscow. In this encounter a Russian force commanded by General Miloradovich inflicted heavy losses on the rear guard of the Grande Armée. Although the French thwarted Miloradovich's goal of encircling and destroying the corps of Marshal Davout, they withdrew in a partial state of disorder due to ongoing Russian harassment and heavy artillery bombardments. The French reversal at Vyazma, although indecisive, was significant due to its damaging impact on several corps of Napoleon's retreating army. Sources. The painting is a part of the series devoted to the great battles of the Patriotic War of 1812.
This one depicts the battle of 22 October (3 November) 1812.
The convoy of General Pavel Choglokov is shown entering the city streets and attacking with bayonets the fiercely defending enemy.
The left part of the composition features the episode of the Pernovsk Infantry Regiment's attack who can be recognized by the St. George Order colours.
Near the Pernovsk Regiment Choglokov is depicted on a horseback. He leads the soldiers into the battle holding a sword in his hand. Next to him is his adjutant.
In the centre of the picture the soldiers and officers of the Eletsk Infantry Regiment are fighting shoulder-to-shoulder against French infantrymen.
In the right part the transport and dispensary carts of the French clotted, that fouled and cavalrymen from different regiments are making their way amid them, hurrying to hide from Russian bullets. Artillerymen are struggling to transport wagons.
On the square in front of the chapel elements of the French infantry are preparing to meet the Russians attacking with bayonets. A group of generals and officers on horses is seen, they are trying to organize a defense.

Peter von Hess

The German artist Peter von Hess performed in the forties of last century by the special order of Tsar Nikolay I of Russia twelve canvases describing different episodes of the Patriotic war. All these canvases are in the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg.
Peter Heinrich Lambert von Hess (29 July 1792 – 4 April 1871) was a German painter, known for historic paintings, especially of the Napoleonic Wars and the Greek War of Independence.
